Multilevel Modeling

I teach methods classes. My niche is in teaching pretty advanced courses that fit in at the cutting edge of dealing with data that have a latent or unobserved structure. In other words, data with some kind of endogeneity or omitted variable bias problem that we tend to see in hierarchical, spatial, network, temporal or otherwise grouped data.

This video is a lecture that I gave at Indiana University in 2018 that forms an introduction to my multilevel modeling classes. I’ve given similar versions of this talk at a few other schools and it’s also the basis for the early lectures in my MLM classes.

My Return To Ranting About Methods

For those who don’t know, I put in notice to officially leave Michigan Medicine this summer. I’ve been a lead statistician at Michigan since Summer of 2019. Getting this job after my postdoc was honestly incredible and I’ve learned a ton doing it. Ann Arbor will forever be one of my favorite places on earth. But after the year of hell covid, I decided I had to get back to my family and friends. Moving back to the south is not something that I ever expected to do but my priorities definitely changed.

In addition to leaving Michigan I’m making an even bigger change in that I’m going to be teaching methods workshops as my primary job. I’m officially a small business owner and teaching methods classes online. This is a huge change for me but I’ve always enjoyed teaching more than any other part of academia. It’s actually the reason I went to grad school over law school in the first place. I’ll be offering classes on a pretty regular basis online and eventually posting materials on here about what I’m teaching or anything else rant worthy.

Since I’m now a business owner I’m making at least a vague attempt to build up my website which has languished for a few years almost totally ignored. I’ll be putting course materials and resources on here as well as some reading lists I’ve built over the years. I’m also making a bit of an effort to restart at blogging about methods now that I’m going to have more time on my hands.
